The Fat Boy Summer Road Trip 2014 - Day 3

Day 3 of the Fat Boy Summer Road Trip of 2014 found me waking to an awesome view of the Mississippi River west of Red Wing, Minnesota.  Most of the day was the same as the last, with places and views the only real difference.  One of the things you notice about this part of the country is how well they preserve historical buildings.  The best reflection of this from the train is these amazing old train stations at every stop along the way.

Day Three ended in Chicago at Union Station.  My next train was supposed to leave at 9:30pm, but didn't get out until after I was asleep sometime after 11:30pm.  Upon arrival at Chicago I got my carry on bags to the Metropolitan Club in the station (the VIP waiting area for those with sleeping car tickets).  While in the Metro Club I asked the Red Cap attendant on the baggage room where I should eat dinner.  He said "If you like BBQ go down the block to Robinson's No. 1 Ribs and order the chicken.", so that is exactly what I set off to do.

When I got to Robinson's and introduced myself to the owner, I asked what I had to have from his place.  He said I needed to try his pulled pork, and the sweet potato pie.  The pulled pork was served on a bun, but was better eaten with a fork.  Rich and juicy, with just the right amount of Mr. Robinson's homemade sauce it was heaven after eating train food for most of three days.  Serving size was large and in the memphis style it was served with just enough slaw to put on the sandwich, not served as a side.  Some of the best pulled pork I have eaten.  The sweet potato pie was delicious, with a touch of lemon that I had never had in this type of pie before but found refreshing after the heavier flavors of the BBQ.  It was a good enough meal that I tipped the Red Cap extra for the recommendation when I picked up my bags before boarding the Lake Shore Limited for the final leg of my journey.

Sleeping car passengers were allowed to load on time, even though the train was delayed, so we got settled in and most of us were asleep before the rest of the train was boarded and left the station.  On to day four of the Fat Boy Summer Road Trip!
